SEATTLE, Wash. — The #6 Pepperdine women's tennis team got back on track Saturday with a 4-2 win over #15 California at the ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships consolation draw.
The Waves (3-2) won the doubles point, then the top of the lineup took care of business, as Janice Tjen, Savannah Broadus and Lisa Zaar put away their opponents in straight sets. With the win, the Waves will face either #14 USC or Washington tomorrow at a time that has yet to be determined.
For the second straight match, the nation's No. 4 doubles team of Broadus and Tjen dominated a ranked opponent, as they beat #16 Mao Mushika and Hanna Viller Moeller 6-2. The Waves' duo broke the Golden Bears in the fourth game, then won the next four games to remain undefeated this spring. Then on court three, Jasmine Conway and Zaar clinched the doubles point after breaking Berta Folch Passola and Katja Wiersholm in the tenth game to win 6-4.
Tjen put the Waves up 2-0 with her decisive, straight-set win over #51 Valentina Ivanov at the third position. In a match that wasn't particularly close, Tjen won early break points in both sets to cruise to a 6-2, 6-1 win, marking the second time this weekend in which she helped the Waves in singles.
Although the Golden Bears got on the board with a win on the sixth line, #6 Broadus picked up a straight-set win over a top-25 opponent, as she beat #22 Jessica Alsola 6-3, 6-4 at the second position. California would put another point on the board with a win on court four, but #15 Zaar held off an upset-minded #21 Hannah Viller Moeller in the second set of her 6-2, 7-5 win to clinch the match for Pepperdine.
