Balanced Effort Leads Waves Over UC Davis

MALIBU – The Pepperdine men's basketball team held UC Davis to its lowest scoring output of the season on Saturday afternoon, as a balanced scoring and defending attack led the Waves to an 85-46 win.

The Waves (6-7) had five players score in double-figures to head into the break on a win.

BIG WAVES
  • Dovydas Butka (Panevezys, Lithuania) accrued an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double while going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and dishing out three assists.
  • Jaxon Olvera (Houston, Texas/Dynamic Prep) earned 15 points in his first career start, shooting 6-for-8 from the field and making his only three-point attempt of the game. The freshman also gathered three steals.
  • Stefan Todorovic (Belgrade, Serbia/SMU/USF) contributed 11 points and seven boards while adding three assists and a steal.
  • Moe Odum (The Bronx, N.Y./Pacific) also recorded 11 points to go with three rebounds, five assists and two steals.
  • Danilo Dozic (Belgrade, Serbia) rounded out the double-figure scoring column with 10 points on 4-of-9 field goal shooting.

KEY STATS
  • Pepperdine out-shot the Aggies 52-28% from the field and went 38% from beyond the arc compared to UC Davis's 7%.
  • The Waves forced more Aggie turnovers as well, gathering 18 (which Pepperdine translated to 32 points) in contrast to Pepperdine's 11.
  • The Waves outrebounded Davis 44-30 and outscored the opposition in the paint 38-20.

RECAP
In his first start as a Wave, Olvera also scored the first bucket of the game on a turnaround jumper. The next two minutes of play were stagnant, only scoring from the free throw line, but UC Davis nailed a three to get the Aggies on the board. Pepperdine followed with a 9-0 run and didn't look back, holding UCD to 27% from the field and 13% from long range while the Waves stretched their lead to 24 heading into the locker rooms at a 43-19 lead.

The Aggies attempted a run to open the second half but the Waves thwarted the effort by the way of another Olvera bucket– this time on a fast break three. In fact, Pepperdine had a better shooting half in the latter 20 minutes than the former, going .536 from the field compared to the 50% from the first stanza. The highlight of the game occurred with eight minutes to play on an Odum steal-induced fastbreak where the guard flipped the ball off the backboard for a trailing Boubacar Coulibaly who dunked the oop over a UC Davis defender. Pepperdine would expand the lead to 42 following a Kyle Braun three and leading to an 85-46 final.
