LOS ANGELES — After Friday's results, Pepperdine women's tennis sophomore Vivian Yang has one last chance at making the NCAA Tournament at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Sectional Championships tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Yang will play Lan Mi of California in the quarterfinal playoff at 10 a.m. The winner will make the NCAA Tournament. Although Yang has already qualified for the postseason with doubles partner Savannah Broadus, this would be her first-ever NCAA singles appearance.
On Friday morning, Yang fell 6-1, 6-3 in her quarterfinal match in straight sets to California sophomore #107 Mao Mushika. That loss ended Yang's impressive main draw run, which saw the Auckland, New Zealand native upset #15 Emma Charney of USC in the round of 16.
Later that evening, Pepperdine's all-freshman doubles team of Alexia Harmon and Liam Oved bowed out of the tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set loss to #35 Amelia Honer and Anna-Marie Weissheim of UC Santa Barbara. The Waves duo made the round of 16 via a walkover, as its first-round opponent from USC withdrew from the tournament.
Should Yang advance to the postseason, it will be the seventh-consecutive NCAA Tournament with multiple Pepperdine singles players. This year, the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will take place in the fall at Baylor University from Nov. 19-24.
