MALIBU, Calif. — Competing for one last time before the NCAA Championships later this month, the Pepperdine women's tennis team will send three players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Sectional Championship, held at USC from Nov. 7-10.
Singles play begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. All pertinent links can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
This tournament is the last chance to earn postseason bids. Six singles players from each section (all four semifinalists, plus two quarterfinal playoff winners) and three doubles teams (both semifinalists and the third-place team) will punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Waco, Texas later this month.Â
Alexia Harmon, Liam Oved and Vivian Yang will make the short trip to USC's Marks Tennis Center this weekend. While Yang will go to NCAAs with Savannah Broadus in doubles, she will try to earn a spot in the singles draw at sectionals.
The first round of singles begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow with Oved's match against Washington's Alexia Jacobs. An unranked freshman from Israel, Oved has a four-match win streak heading into sectionals with two ranked wins. Her 8-1 record this fall includes three wins over ranked opponents, which ranks second on the team.
Elsewhere in the draw, Yang takes on Rixt Van Der Werff from Colorado in the first-ever meeting between the two players. Their match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Harmon, the No. 17 player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's newcomer rankings, will face UCLA freshman Kate Fakih at 11:30 a.m. Fakih is the 12th-ranked newcomer according to the ITA and has beaten Oved already this fall.Â
In doubles, Harmon and Oved will look to continue their winning ways against USC's Sloane Morra and Anya Murthy in the first round. The freshmen have won their last four matches and have a 6-1 record this fall; their six wins are tied for the team-high.Â
From here, the fall season ends at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, held at Baylor University's Hurd Tennis Center from Nov. 19-24.
