MALIBU, Calif. — For the first time this season, the Pepperdine men's tennis team will compete at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Sectional Championships, which take place from Nov. 7-10.
Play begins at 10 a.m. every day with doubles first, then singles. There will be one singles and one doubles match per day until Sunday, which will have the singles semifinals and finals. Admission to the tournament is free. Select matches will be livestreamed via PlaySight; all pertinent links can be found on the men's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
This weekend is the last chance to earn postseason bids. Six singles players from each section (all four semifinalists, plus two quarterfinal playoff winners) and three doubles teams (both semifinalists and the third-place team) will punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Waco, Texas later this month. No Pepperdine men's tennis players have qualified for the postseason yet.
Linus Carlsson Halldin, Maxi Homberg and Chris Papa are the three Waves competing against players from across the western United States this weekend. All three will play in singles, while Carlsson Halldin and Homberg will play together in doubles for the first time ever. Their first doubles match will be an all-West Coast Conference battle between Gonzaga's Jay Fairclough and Giovanni Branchetti.
In the singles draw, #103 Homberg will face UC Santa Barbara's Gianluca Brunkow in the first round at 1 p.m. Homberg has faced off with Brunkow in doubles, but this is the first meeting between the two in singles. On the opposite side of the draw, Carlsson Halldin will take on New Mexico's Georgio Samaha at 1 p.m. Papa's first singles match will be against Boise State's James Van Herzeele at 2 p.m.
Should any Waves qualify for NCAAs, they will head to Baylor University in Waco, Texas for the postseason from Nov. 19-24.
