The #22 Pepperdine women's soccer team took home 12 West Coast Conference awards by nine different players as announced Wednesday afternoon
Spearheaded by graduate
Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif.) and junior
Karina Gonzalez (Sanger, Calif.), the Waves were honored in nearly every category awarded.
For the second year in a row, Waldeck is taking home offensive player of the year. With eleven goals and six assists, the Newhall native leads the team in shots as well as shots on goal. The last Waves to earn back-to-back honors was in 2017 and 2018 when Hailey Haribson ('19) won Defensive Player of the year and Brielle Preece ('19) won Goalkeeper of the Year.
This is Pepperdine's first Midfielder of the Year honor since the awards creation in 2021. Gonzalez leads the way for minutes played, with all by 136 minutes on the pitch. Although the junior does not have goals to boost her resume, Gonzalez has proven to be a steady player that can hold and distribute the ball efficiently, becoming a rock for her teammates to lean on.
Waldeck also earned a spot on the All-WCC first team, the only Wave to do so this year. As her second consecutive year on the first team for the conference, this also marks four All-WCC selections in her five years with the squad,
Gonzalez joins junior
Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) on the All-WCC second team. While this is the midfielder's first All-WCC selection, Wynalda finds herself on the second team for the third straight year. In the regular season, the Thousand Oaks native recorded four goals and four assists, good for third most points on the team as well as being tied for second for most shots on goal.
The 11-person all-freshman team sees the inclusion of three Waves. Freshman goalkeeper
Jillian Medvecky (Concord Township, Ohio), forward
Elle Quinn (Folsom, Calif.) and midfielder
Ariana Salvador (Newhall, Calif.) all earned conference honors in their first years as Waves.
Medvecky has started 17 of the 20 matches for Pepperdine, recording 51 saves with only 1.06 goals allowed on average. Her stats put her third in the conference, less than .10 away from Goalkeeper of the Year Bre Norris.
Quinn and Salvador have been a dynamic duo for the offense this season, combining for three goals and five assists. Quinn notched the game winner against Portland on the road while Salvador was able to give Pepperdine the equalizer against Santa Clara at home.
Four different Waves were given an honorable mention to the all-conference teams. Graduate forward
Megan Edelman (Danville, Calif.), redshirt junior
Tabitha LaParl (Lakewood, Calif.) , sophomore
Peyton Leonard (Ladera Ranch, Calif.), and redshirt sophomore
Kyra Murphy (Riverside, Calif.) all earned a spot on the honorable mention team, receiving at least two votes each from WCC coaches.
