Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | By Athletic Communications

Waves Go 2-0 at Gary Troyer Tournament Today

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The #4 Pepperdine men's water polo team (13-2) went 2-0 on the opening day of the Gary Troyer Tournament on Friday.
 
In the first game today, the Waves showcased their defense as they held Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (6-7) to five goals and won the contest 19-5. Then in a game under the lights, Pepperdine defeated Pomona-Pitzer (6-6) 17-11 as they outshot them .515 to .282.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Redshirt freshman Bronson Birdsall (Kailua, Hawai'i) had five goals on a perfect 1.000 shooting percentage along with one assist.
  • Junior attacker Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary) posted a hat-trick in both games today.
  • Freshman Goalie Max Smirnov (Petah Tikva, Israel) held the Stags to five goals to go along with a .688 save percentage.
  • Fifth year attacker Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif.) had five goals on the day with an impressive .714 shooting percentage.
  • Redshirt freshman Adam Yost (Los Angeles, Calif.) had an impressive five assists today.

CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS RECAP
 
Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary) got things going as he scored the first goal of the game off a pass from Jon Carcarey (Santa Maria, Calif.). Carcarey then found the back of the net before Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif.) also scored to put Pepperdine up 3-0 halfway through the first quarter. Owen Tift (Newport Beach, Calif.) also found the back of the cage in the quarter as he and the Waves took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
 
After only allowing one goal in the first quarter, the Waves defense put up a zero in the second period while Milo Joseph (Malibu, Calif.), Erik Ionescu (Budapest, Hungary) and Reed Pantaleon (Huntington Beach, Calif.) all scored, and Pepperdine took a 7-1 lead into the break.
 
Pepperdine matched its first half offensive production in the first eight minutes of the second half as seven different Waves scored in the third quarter and Pepperdine was able to take a 10-goal lead with one quarter left to play.
 
After Claremont scored the first goal of the final period, the Waves finished the game with the last five goals of the game to defeat the Stags 19-5.
 
A total of eleven different Pepperdine players scored in the contest and the Waves were led by Bronson Birdsall (Kailua, Hawai'i) and Csapo who both had hat-tricks in the game.

POMONA-PITZER RECAP
 
After the Sagehens opened the scoring, Carcarey tied this up 1-1 with an assist from Csapo. On the Waves next possession, Carcarey connected with Csapo who found the back of the net to put Pepperdine in front by one. Hosea then put Pepperdine up by two before the teams traded goals to end the period as the Waves took a 4-2 advantage into the second quarter.
 
Hosea scored his third goal of the contest before a goal by the Sagehens brought them back within two. The Waves would score six of the last seven goals in the period as they took a 10-4 lead into the break.
 
Csapo scored the second halves first two goals to give Pepperdine an eight-goal advantage. Stellar defense from the Waves propelled them to a 12-5 lead with eight minutes left to play.
 
In a final period that saw the two teams trade goals and scores from five different Waves including Conor Brough (Dana Point, Calif.), Birdsall, Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary), Charles Warmington (Newport, Calif.) and Jackson Benners (Dallas, Texas) Pepperdine ultimately defeated Pomona-Pitzer 17-11 this evening.
