MALIBU, Calif. —  Playing in its penultimate regular-season fall tournament, the Pepperdine women's tennis program will send four freshmen to San Diego for the Torero Tennis Classic this weekend.
Held at the University of San Diego's Barnes Tennis Center, the tournament runs from Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3. Friday's action will begin with singles at 10:30 a.m. If available, live stream and live stat links can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
Aside from the hosting Toreros, opponents from Utah, Washington and Wisconsin will compete in this tournament. No NCAA bids will be rewarded over the weekend. While the Waves and Toreros have crossed paths several times throughout fall play, this weekend serves as another chance for Pepperdine to square off against its West Coast Conference rival.Â
Taylor Goetz, Alexia Harmon, Liam Oved and Duru Söke will represent the Waves at the Torero Tennis Classic. The four freshmen, who comprised the final recruiting class under recently departed head coach Per Nilsson, have shown gradual improvement over the fall so far. Of those four, Oved leads the team with a 5-1 singles record — including two wins over nationally ranked singles opponents. Both Goetz and Söke are riding two-match win streaks heading into this weekend, while Harmon is 5-2 in singles play this fall.
All four freshmen will begin singles play at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Söke takes on Catherine Gagnon of Washington, while Goetz will play another Husky, Zehra Suko. Harmon faces Utah's Kaila Barksdale, while Oved takes on Emma Kamper, also of Utah. Only one player in the singles draw is nationally ranked: #39 Claudia de las Heras of San Diego.
From here, the Waves will have one more shot at earning NCAA bids at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Sectional Championships, held at USC from Nov. 7-10.
