The #20 Pepperdine women's soccer team remained in contention for first place in the West Coast Conference after drawing even with Oregon State 1-1 Sunday afternoon.
Throughout the match, the Waves (10-3-4, 4-1-2) out-shot the Beavers (6-7-2, 4-1-2) 21-to-11, but did not find a goal in live action. Almost a third of Pepperdine's possession was in the attacking third, but three shots on goal did not prove enough to secure a win.
Oregon State struck first in the opening half. On the tail of three blocked shots, the Beavers took the opportunity to switch to an offensive attack. Sailing the ball past freshman
Jillian Medvecky (Concord Township, Ohio), Oregon State sent a ball to the opposite side of the goal from the right-hand side of the box for the lead.
Coming out of halftime, the Waves were hungry for an equalizer. Being aggressive paid off shortly after the start of the second half. Graduate
Megan Edelman (Danville, Calif.) was taken down in the right-hand side of the box in the 63rd minute, warranting a penalty kick. For her seventh goal of the season, graduate Tori Walldeck (Newhall, Calif.) stepped up and sank her penalty kick into the net to tie up the match for the Waves.
Doubling shots in the second half with 14, Pepperdine was on the hunt for a win. Despite walking away with a draw, the Waves are still at the top of the table for the WCC Championship. Currently tied with Oregon State, both teams look to Santa Clara, who is in a three-way tie with one less game played.
GOALS
35' | Oregon State's Valerie Tobias netted a goal off her right foot into the opposite side of the net for the lead.
63' | Waldeck buried the penalty kick thanks to the foul drawn by Edelman in the right-hand side of the box.
