SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's tennis doubles team of #24 Savannah Broadus and Vivian Yang will be heading to Waco, Texas for the NCAA Doubles Championship after winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional title at the Aztec Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Playing in their maiden tournament, Broadus and Yang beat UCLA freshmen Olivia Center and Kate Fakih 6-4, 6-1 to give Pepperdine back-to-back regional doubles championships. Broadus won the 2023 ITA Southwest Regional doubles title with Janice Tjen after the All-American duo fell in the final the year prior.
With the win, Pepperdine has sent a doubles team to the NCAA Tournament in five consecutive seasons under current head coach Per Nilsson. Broadus, who is already the program's all-time leader with 114 career doubles wins, also joins Angela Lawrence (1996-99) as the only Waves to make four NCAA doubles tournament appearances.
In the championship match, Broadus and Yang beat the UCLA freshmen 6-4 in the first set before cruising in the second set. The Waves broke the Bruins on deuce point to start the second set, then with Yang behind the service line in the second game, the Waves went up a break by winning another deciding point. UCLA held serve in the third game to make the score 2-1, yet the match was all Pepperdine from that point forward. Broadus and Yang rattled off the next three games to make the score 5-1 before breaking the Bruins for the match in the seventh game.
Later that day, #8 Broadus faced UC Santa Barbara All-American Amelia Honer in the championship singles match. The 14th-ranked Honer went on to win the singles title in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. However, both players already earned postseason bids reaching the championship match.
Next week, Pepperdine will return to San Diego for the USD Invitational, held at Barnes Tennis Center from Nov. 1-3. The final opportunity to earn NCAA postseason bids is the ITA Division I Sectional Championships, which takes place at USC from Nov. 7-10.
