SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's tennis doubles team of #24 Savannah Broadus and Vivian Yang is one win away from earning an NCAA postseason bid after their semifinal win at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regionals on Monday.
In a three-set match between two top-30 teams, #24 Broadus and Yang outlasted #28 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Ahmani Guichard of UCLA. The Pepperdine duo won the first set 6-2 before the Bruins won the second 6-3 to force a ten-point tiebreaker. Yet Broadus and Yang rolled 10-3 in the breaker for their fourth win of the season. They will face another UCLA team — freshmen Kate Fakih and Olivia Center — in the championships tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Pepperdine is the only Southwest Regional team with a doubles and singles finalist. Later on Monday, #8 Broadus beat #89 Kailey Evans of San Diego 6-4, 6-3 in an all-West Coast Conference battle. With the win, Broadus will face UC Santa Barbara All-American #14 Amelia Honer in the championships tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
Should Broadus and Yang win on Tuesday, they will send a Pepperdine doubles team to the NCAA Tournament for a fifth consecutive year. Both singles finalists earned NCAA bids, but both Broadus and Honer will play to improve their postseason seeding. Broadus already punched her ticket to NCAAs at the ITA All-Americans in September.
From here, the team's final opportunity to earn NCAA postseason bids is the ITA Division I Sectional Championships, held at USC from Nov. 7-10.
