SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Pepperdine women's tennis players Savannah Broadus and Vivian Yang won twice at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional to reach Sunday's quarterfinals.
Broadus and Yang's pair of wins highlighted the day, which saw Pepperdine win four doubles matches, one singles match and two consolation singles matches in San Diego. In singles, Broadus was also the only Wave to reach the round of 16 with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Arizona's Maryna Ostrzygalo.
Playing in their first match as a team, Broadus and Yang made quick work of Arizona's Teja Tirunelveli and Danielle Tuhten in an 8-2 win. Later that morning, the Pepperdine duo posted another 8-2 victory — this time over Emilija Tverijonaite and Aiya Nupbay of Arizona State. As the 2-seed in the draw, Broadus and Yang are three wins away from earning an NCAA doubles berth, which goes to the doubles champion at this tournament.
Elsewhere in doubles, a pair of all-freshmen teams won their round of 32 matches before both falling in the next round. Alexia Harmon and Liam Oved beat Arizona's Martyna Ostrzygalo and Belen Nevenhoven before running into USC's #20 Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper in the next round.
Fellow freshmen Taylor Goetz and Duru Söke extended their win streak to four with an 8-4 victory over San Diego State's Charlotte Roesch and Gloria Alogo Piqueras. Unfortunately, Goetz and Söke would bow out with an 8-5 loss to USD's #60 Kailey Evans and Claudia De Las Heras in the round of 16.
Both Harmon and Oved saw their singles runs come to a close in the round of 16. Harmon fell to Arizona State sophomore Emilija Tverijonaite in a 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-0 three-set loss. Oved, meanwhile, fell in straight-sets to highly touted UCLA freshman Kate Fakih, 6-3, 6-3.
In the consolation draw, Goetz won in straight-sets over Arizona's Danielle Tuhten, while Söke beat Cecilia Costa of Long Beach State in three sets.
Tomorrow's action starts with doubles at 9 a.m. with singles to follow. Consolation matches will also continue throughout the weekend.
