MALIBU, Calif. —  Competing for NCAA bids for the second time this season, the Pepperdine women's tennis team makes the short trip south to San Diego for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regionals, which runs from Oct. 17-22.
The ITA Southwest Regionals will be held at two separate sites in the San Diego area: USD's Barnes Tennis Center and SDSU's Aztec Tennis Center. Tournament information can be found on the ITA website and the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
Both singles finalists and the doubles champion will earn bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which will take place at Baylor University from November 19-24. Pepperdine has sent multiple singles players to the NCAA Tournament in the last seven consecutive years under head coach Per Nilsson. Over in doubles, the Waves look to continue their four-year streak of sending a doubles team to NCAAs.
For the first time all season, six Waves will be available. Savannah Broadus, who already earned an NCAA singles berth at the ITA All-American Championships, returns to the court in both singles and doubles. As the top-ranked player in the Southwest Region, Broadus is #8 in the ITA's national polls and ranks sixth all-time in program history with 106 singles wins. The senior from Carrollton, Texas has a 3-1 record this fall.
ITA Regionals will be a valuable opportunity for Pepperdine's young team to gain collegiate tennis experience. Of the five underclasswomen on the roster, true freshman Taylor Goetz leads the team with four singles wins through two fall tournaments. Fellow freshman Duru Söke is not far behind with three singles wins, while Vivian Yang, Liam Oved and Alexia Harmon have two wins apiece so far.
However, the Waves could be a bit of a wild card in doubles. Despite playing with five different combinations, Pepperdine has a 6-3 overall record in doubles with a ranked win under its belt — all thanks to Söke and Oved's upset win over #47 Tomi Main and Yu-Chin Tsai of TCU at the Battle in the Bay Classic. At the Women of Troy Invite two weeks ago, the Waves posted a perfect 4-0 record between three different doubles teams against mostly Power-4 competitors. All told, the Waves have a 6-3 doubles record.
From here, the Waves have one more opportunity to earn postseason bids at the ITA Division I Sectional Championships, which takes place from Nov. 7-10 at USC.
