Broadus and Tjen Earn Top-10 Doubles Victory in Freeman Memorial Tournament Finale

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — On the final day of the Freeman Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas, the Pepperdine women's tennis doubles team of Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen capped off the tournament with a win over a top-10 opponent on Sunday.

Aside from Broadus and Tjen's 7-5 win over #6 Ange Oby Kajuru/Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State, the Waves notched one consolation doubles win and one consolation singles win on the final day of the tournament. Four ranked teams, including the Waves, were in this year's Freeman Memorial Tournament, which served as Pepperdine's spring season opener before the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 26-27.

In a doubles matchup between two top-10 teams, Broadus and Tjen fell behind early as Oby Kajuru and Komar broke the Waves to go up 2-0 in a brisk start to the match. Yet the Waves broke back in the next game by winning the first three points, then sealing the deal on a winner from Broadus to get on the board. An overhead smash from Broadus helped the Waves consolidate the break, which effectively brought the Pepperdine duo back in the mix of things.

Pepperdine went up 40-15 in the next game, however, Oklahoma State stormed back to hold serve. With Broadus behind the service line, the Waves won the seventh game with little resistance, but the match would be played on serve until the Waves won a critical breakpoint. Despite Komar's excellence behind the service line, Pepperdine broke Oklahoma State at 5-5 on deuce point with a winner from Broadus at the net.

Momentum was fully in the Waves' hands in the next game. With Tjen serving for the match, the Waves went up 40-15 with Broadus' quick reflexes at the net and an ace from Tjen to force match point. Tjen's serve was too much to handle on match point, as the senior finished off Oklahoma State for the 7-5 win.

Elsewhere, Pepperdine managed one doubles win and one singles win in consolation play. The team of Lisa Zaar and Jasmine Conway beat UNLV's Zita Kovacs and Salsa Aher 6-3 on their home court. In singles, the true freshman Conway earned her first collegiate singles win with a 7-5, 6-2 win over UNLV's Cindy Hu.
