Tierney Earns WCC Player of the Week

MALIBU, Calif. – For the third consecutive week, a Pepperdine men's water polo player earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors, as Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) earned the conference's award on Tuesday.

Tierney had a strong showing at the MPSF Invite for the Pepperdine men's water polo team. He helped lead the Waves to a 3-1 record with wins against #9 UC San Diego, #8 UC Davis and #4 Princeton. The lone loss was to #2 UCLA.

Against #9 UC San Diego, Tierney led the Waves with five total points off of two goals and three assists. He also picked up three steals in the 15-12 victory. Then vs. #2 UCLA, Tierney had two more goals (tied for the game-high for the Waves). Against #8 UC Davis, Tierney led the waves with six points including a hat-trick and three assists. He also drew an exclusion in the 15-11 win against the Aggies. Finally, against #4 Princeton, Tierney tacked on three more goals and an assist for a total of four points. He drew another exclusion in the 15-11 victory against the Tigers.

Tierney had a stellar week at the MPSF Invite against four top ten teams tallying a total of ten goals and seven assists for a total of 17 points. He also notched two hat-tricks, three steals and two drawn exclusions in the four games. Tierney posted a .625 shooting percentage at the MPSF Invite.

On the season, Tierney has 24 goals and 14 assists for a total of 38 points in 14 games.

Tierney and the Waves will take on #2 UCLA this Friday before heading to the Gary Troyer Tournament to face Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont McKenna College on Saturday Sept. 30.
