#4 Waves Fall to #2 UCLA, Then Bounce Back Against #8 UC Davis in the Evening

Los Angeles, Calif. — In the first game, the #4 Pepperdine men's water polo team fell to #2 UCLA in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Invite on Saturday morning at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The Waves bounced back in the evening to beat #8 UC Davis 15-11.

Against UCLA, Pepperdine (11-2) fell behind in the first half and was unable to make a comeback. The Waves ultimately lost the match 15-11. Against UC Davis, the Waves and Aggies battled in a back-and-forth first half, but Pepperdine was able to pull away in the third quarter thanks to stellar defense by Antonio Knez who only allowed one goal in the period. The Waves held on to win the contest 15-11.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Against UC Davis, senior center defender Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) had a hat-trick along with three assists, posting a total of six points in the game.
  • In the second game, graduate driver Ryan Brosnan  (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) posted a hat-trick.
  • Against UC Davis, graduate goalie Antonio Knez (Dubvronik, Croatia/Gimnazija Dubrovnik/Princeton) had fifteen saves while posting a .577 save percentage.
GAME #1 RECAP
 
After a scoreless first few minutes, UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) found the back of the net to cut UCLA's lead in half, 2-1. UCLA then scored again to increase their advantage to 3-1. Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) picked up his second assist of the game as he connected with Nico Tierney who put the ball in the back of the net to bring the Waves within one at the end of the first quarter, 3-2.
 
The Bruins scored twice early on in the second period to take a 5-2 lead. Chase Wilson (New York, N.Y./Greenwich HS) then scored to cut UCLA's lead to 5-3. The Bruins added two more goals in the period to take a 7-3 lead into the break.
 
UCLA scored twice to open up the third quarter, increasing their lead to 9-3. Back-to-back goals from Ryan Brosnan and Csapo brought the Waves within four, 9-5. Jon Carcarey (Lompoc, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) then scored the Waves third straight goal to cut UCLA's lead to 9-6. The Bruins tacked on a couple more goals to take an 11-7 lead into the final period.
 
The Bruins found the back of the net twice to open up the fourth quarter, giving them a 13-7 lead. Brosnan battled back with a goal of his own, but UCLA scored once more to take a 14-8 lead with a few minutes to go. Back-to-back goals from Andrew Outcalt (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) brought the Waves within five, but it wasn't enough as UCLA won the contest 15-11.

GAME #2 RECAP
 
Nico Tierney opened up the scoring on the first possession of the game, but a quick counter from UC Davis knotted the game up at one-all. Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) then found the back of the net to give the Waves a 2-1 advantage. The Aggies fought back once more and scored a goal of their own to tie the game up 2-2, but a goal from Matty Walsh gave Pepperdine a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
After a back-and-forth start to the second quarter, the game was tied for the fourth time, 4-4. Csapo and Anthony D'Ambra (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) then scored back-to-back goals to give Pepperdine a 6-4 lead. After a hard-fought period, the Waves took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
 
UC Davis opened up the scoring in the third period to tie the game up at seven-all. Brosnan then collected back-to-back goals to give Pepperdine a 9-7 lead. Hosea and Tierney then added on a pair of goals to increase the Waves' lead to 11-7. After a stellar performance by Antonio Knez in the third period, the Waves took a 12-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Matty Walsh (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) scored on the opening possession of the fourth quarter to put Pepperdine up 13-7. A back-and-forth middle of the final period had the Waves up 14-9 with a couple minutes to play. The Aggies rallied back by scoring a couple goals, but Dane Howell (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS/Orange Coast College) countered with a goal to keep the Waves in front. Led by Brosnan and Tierney, who both tallied a hat-trick in the game, Pepperdine won the contest 15-11.
