SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Kicking off the Battle in the Bay tournament in San Francisco, Calif., two Pepperdine women's tennis players advanced in the singles bracket and all three Waves competing in doubles were victorious in the first round on Thursday.
In doubles,
Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) and
Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) cruised past Midori Castillo and Kayla Wilkins of Arizona 8-2. They will face off against UC Santa Barbara's Amelia Honer and Camille Kiss in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Elsewhere in doubles,
Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) teamed up with Oklahoma State's Lucia Peyre to beat Helena Narmont and Margaret Polk of TCU by a score of 8-5. This win sets up a showdown with Georgia's Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova — the latter of whom is a familiar foe for Broadus, as she and
Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) dispatched her and former teammate Guillermina Grant in the Battle of the Bay doubles final a year ago. Broadus is also set to play tomorrow at 9 a.m.
In singles, Broadus, who was seeded third in the women's open bracket, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Polk of TCU. The win sets her up with a second-round match against her singles partner, Peyre of Oklahoma State tomorrow at noon.
Elsewhere in the singles bracket, the 5-seeded Redelijk also was victorious against a TCU player — this time, she beat Narmont 6-3, 6-0. Tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., Redelijk will square off against Mai Nirundorn of Georgia in the second round.
Later in the evening, Campana fell to 2-seed Connie Ma of Stanford 6-1, 6-0; she will move to the consolation bracket and face off with Arizona's Kayla Wilkins tomorrow at 6 p.m.
