NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Julia Quinonez and Karina Gonzalez found the back of the net in the second half as the Pepperdine women's soccer team shut out CSUN 2-0 on Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field.
The Waves (1-0-3) and Matadors (0-3-1) were nearly even after the first 45 minutes, having each squad take five shots. In the second half, Pepperdine came out firing and took four shots before Quinonez found the back of the net. The Waves continued to press the offensive zone and outshot the Matadors 14-7. Taylor Rath collected her first solo shutout of the season and second of her career.
GOALS
Pepperdine 56': The Waves earned a throw in that freshman defender Peyton Leonard (Ladera Ranch, Calif./San Juan Hills HS) threw to senior forward Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) who was inside the box at about the five yard line. Waldeck then sent a left-footed tap to freshman forward Julia Quinonez (Torrance, Calif./Torrance HS) who was crashing in and tapped the ball with her left foot into the back of the net. This was Quinonez's second goal of the season.
Pepperdine 81': Pepperdine had a corner kick on the right side of the field. Waldeck took the corner and sent a right-footed pass in the air towards the left side of the box. Sophomore midfielder Karina Gonzalez (Sanger, Calif./Hallmark Charter School) jumped higher than the CSUN defender and headed the ball past the keeper. This was Gonzalez's first goal of the season and first career goal.

Head coach Tim Ward said: "I'm really proud of all the girls tonight. We started the game really well and thought we scored two goals before they were flagged for offside. Having said that, our desire, our fight, and our unity we're excellent. We're still not where we want to be with our rhythm and sharpness, but it will come with time. In the meantime, I'm really glad we got a positive result tonight as I feel we've been a bit unlucky in the last few games."
UP NEXT
Pepperdine will head to Northern California to play Fresno State on Friday, Sept. 1. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
