PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine baseball team scored a season-high 19 runs as the squad downed BYU, 19-6, in the season and series finale on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park. The Waves had 17 RBI on the day, which is also a season high.
The Waves (8-20, 19-30) jumped out front 5-0 after the first two and a half innings over the Cougars (13-14, 24-29), though BYU closed the gap in the bottom of the third with four runs to get within one, 5-4. Pepperdine then had 14 unanswered runs over the next four innings played, including a six-run fourth and seven-run fifth to give them insurance needed to hold onto the victory.
BIG WAVES
- Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) was 3-for-6 on the day including his 18th home run of the season and scored three runs for the Waves, which tied his career-high. Johnson's 18 homers are now tied second on the Pepperdine single-season list with Chris Kelly (2002). Johnson currently has 37 career home runs and stays in sole possession of third on the career all-time list.
- Junior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity Pawling HS) was 3-for-4 on the day including his sixth homer of the season, which was a three-run shot. Bradshaw also had a double and crossed the plate three times for the Waves.
- Redshirt sophomore outfielder Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) had a career day going 3-for-5 including a career-high four RBI. Pemberton's three hits were all doubles.
- Junior outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was also 3-for-5 on the day with his fourth homer of the season, which was a three-run blast. Masino crossed the plate three times for Pepperdine, which tied his career-high.
- Junior infielder Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) was 2-for-4 including two RBI and touched home plate three times, which tied his career-high.
- Freshman infielder Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) was 2-for-5 and tied his career-high in runs scored, crossing the plate twice.
- Freshman RHP Nick Bonn (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS) threw 5.0 innings to collect his fifth win of the season, which is a team high and ties his career high. Bonn sat down four Cougar batters, which also tied his career-high. He has an overall record of 5-1.
- Freshman RHP Dylan Stewart (Alameda, Calif./Saint Joseph Notre Dame HS) threw a career-high 2.0 innings in relief.
GAME RECAP
After a scoreless first inning,
Lincoln Orellana led off the top of the second inning with a single to left.
Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) followed with a single of his own through the left side. With one out,
Jack Basseer sent one right back up the middle to bring in the first run of the game to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead.
Connor Bradshaw then sent one out over the center field fence for a three-run shot to make it 4-0.
In the top of the third,
Ryan Johnson roped a solo homer to give Pepperdine a 5-0 lead. BYU closed the gap in the bottom of the third inning scoring four runs on three hits to get within one, 5-4. In the top of the fourth inning, Pepperdine added six insurance runs on four hits to get the score at 11-4.
The hitting continued for the Waves as Bradshaw led off the top of the fifth inning with a double. A deep fly ball to right, advanced Bradshaw to third. On a BYU wild pitch, Bradshaw crossed the plate to make it 12-4. With runners on the corners with one out,
John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) roped a double to right center, bringing both runs in to extend the lead to 14-4. Orellana traded places with Peck with a double of his own to make it 15-4.
Charles Masino sent the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a two-run homer, 17-4.
Luke Pemberton roped a double to right center bringing in another run for Pepperdine and made it 18-4.
In the top of the seventh inning, Pepperdine added another run to the lead thanks to a Pemberton double down the right field line, 19-4. The Cougars got two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on two solo shots, 19-6. BYU led off the bottom of the final frame with a single, but
Jack Baird (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) sat down the next three Cougar hitters on strikeouts to secure the Pepperdine victory.
