
Waves Fall to Gaels in Game Two

The Waves (9-19, 3-8) dropped in the first inning to the Gaels (11-15, 6-5) 3-0, but cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the second inning. Pepperdine held Saint Mary's scoreless after the first inning until the seventh inning when they pulled ahead 5-3. The Waves tied the game twice, but the Gaels plated the go-ahead and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to collect the win.

BIG WAVES
- Sophomore designated hitter Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) went 3-for-5 and had one RBI.
- Sophomore infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) was 3-for-4 on the day and scored two runs for the Waves. Conley's three hits ties his career-high.
- Junior shortstop John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had two hits on the day and two RBI.
- Freshman RHP Gunnar Nichols (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS) notched a new career-high in strikeouts, sitting down three Gaels' hitters.

The Gaels took an early 3-0 lead after scoring on two hits in the top of the first inning. The Waves were able to get within two after an infield RBI single, 3-1. Both squads were scoreless for two innings, which brought the Waves to the plate in the bottom of the fifth.

With one out, Cam Conley and Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) then doubled down the left field line which scored a run and cut the deficit to one, 3-2. With two outs, Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) was intentionally walked to load the bases. On the first pitch to Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was hit by a pitch that brought in the tying run, 3-all.

Saint Mary's and Pepperdine were scoreless in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Gaels took the lead back after scoring two runs on one hit, 5-3. In the top of the eighth inning, the Gaels added another run on a groundout to first to make it 6-3. In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) and Conley hit back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, Schoen sent a single through the right side that scored a run to get Pepperdine within two, 6-4. Johnson was then intentionally walked to load the bases, but John Peck smacked a two-run single to left field to tie the ball game at 6-all.Â

In the top of the ninth inning, the Gaels got the go-ahead run on a solo home run, 7-6, and then were able to get an insurance run on a single to left to make it 8-6. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Waves had runners on first and third with two outs, but were unable to bring them around and were retired.
