SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team earned a 9-3 victory over Cal Poly in a midweek contest on Tuesday night at Baggett Stadium.
The Waves (8-18) fell behind 2-0 to the Mustangs (7-18), but a four-run top of the second inning including a bases-clearing double by
Greg Mehlhaff propelled Pepperdine over Cal Poly for the win. Pepperdine held Cal Poly scoreless from the fourth to the ninth inning.
BIG WAVES
- Junior outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 2-for-3 on the night with a walk and hit-by-pitch. Masino scored three runs for Pepperdine, which tied his career-high and stole a base. Masino is now on a 13-game on-base streak, which leads the Waves.
- Junior shortstop John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) was 3-for-5 including a double and two triples. This was the first game this season Peck hit two triples and second time in his career he's hit two in one game. Peck has now reached base in 10 straight games.
- Graduate student infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) was 2-for-4 including a double and tied his career-high in RBI with four. Mehlhaff crossed the plate once. He is currently on a nine-game on-base streak and six-game hitting streak.
- Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) was also-2-for-4 and had two RBI. Basseer is now on a six-game hitting and on-base streak.
- Senior LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) threw a career-high 6.0 innings and only allowed four hits. Diamond collected his first win this season.
- Senior RHP Josiah Castillo (Corona, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) threw 3.0 scoreless innings in relief and collected his first save in a Pepperdiine uniform.
GAME RECAP
The Mustangs jumped out front, 2-0, in the bottom of the first inning on a triple and a ground ball to second. In the top of the second inning,
Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) led off with a walk. On a fielder's choice ball and a muffed throw by the Mustangs' shortstop, Orellana advanced to third and gave Pepperdine runners on first and third.
Charles Masino then drew a walk to load the bases.
Jack Basseer hit an RBI blooper into center to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Greg Mehlhaff sent the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a bases clearing double giving the Waves a 4-2 lead.
John Peck led off the top of the third inning with a triple to right center.
Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) hit an RBI sac fly to center to extend the lead 5-2. Masino was then hit by a pitch and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Basseer sent one through the left side to put the Waves up 6-2. Cal Poly cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning after a double down the left-field line, 6-3.
Both squads were scoreless for two innings, which brought the Waves back to the plate in the top of the sixth. Masino smacked a double down the left-field line to lead off. A ground ball towards the middle, advanced Masino to third. Mehlhaff sent one right back up the middle to bring Masino home and give the Waves a 7-3 lead.
Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) followed with a double of his own down the left-field line to make it 8-3.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Waves added an insurance run after Peck smacked a triple to right center and Orellana brought him home on a single to left center to make it 9-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Pepperdine retired the first Mustang on a fly ball to right field. Cal Poly got a runner on after a single through the left side, but the Waves got back-to-back fly balls to secure the victory.
NOTABLE
- Orellana is now on a six-game hitting streak and has reached base in 12 consecutive games, which is the second-most on the squad.

The Waves will be back in Malibu for a four-game homestand beginning with a three-game WCC series against Saint Mary's starting on Thursday, April 6 and concluding on Saturday, April 8. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
