SAN DIEGO Calif. — Playing as the top overall seed in the West Coast Conference women's tennis tournament, the #7 Pepperdine Waves swept the 4-seed Brigham Young University Cougars 4-0 on Friday.
With the win, the Waves have made their 33rd-straight appearance in the WCC title game. Pepperdine will go for its ninth-straight WCC Championship win tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Loyola Marymount, which upset #30 San Diego 4-3 Friday afternoon.
In what was likely the last match between the Waves (17-3, 7-0 WCC) and the Cougars (12-9, 6-3 WCC) before BYU heads to the Big 12 this summer, Pepperdine exacted revenge on the teams' last meeting by winning the doubles point in convincing fashion. The nation's #1 doubles team of Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) got things going with a 6-4 win, then #48 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) and Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) finished off the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two.
Over in singles, senior Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) cruised to a 6-2. 6-1 win on the sixth line to give the Waves a 2-0 advantage. Then the Waves surged. Broadus won 6-1, 6-2 on court two, keeping her undefeated singles record in dual match play intact. Junior Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) would clinch for the Waves on court five with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
