Pepperdine Drops Game One to Santa Clara

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell 5-3 in game one of the West Coast Conference three-game series against Santa Clara at Eddy D. Field Stadium on Friday afternoon.
 
The Waves (15-23, 7-12) fell behind 1-0 to the Broncos (21-15, 8-8) in the top of the second, but answered with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Santa Clara tied the game in the top of the fourth and took the lead back in the top of the fifth, 5-2. The Waves were held scoreless for six innings until getting one more run in the bottom of the eighth.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Jack Goodman (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) had a career-high three hits after going 3-for-4 on the day.
  • Junior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) was 1-for-2 including his fifth home run and two walks.
  • Senior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) had one hit and one RBI.
GAME RECAP
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a solo home run. The Waves answered in the bottom of the second inning scoring two runs thanks to a sac fly by Grant Schoen and a RBI walk by John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS), 2-1.
 
The Broncos tied the game 2-all in the top of the fourth inning on a double to left field. In the top of the fifth inning, Santa Clara grabbed the lead after a fielder's choice ball that scored a run to make it 3-2. In the top of the sixth inning, the Broncos added one more run to the lead after taking advantage of a Pepperdine error, 4-2. Connor Bradshaw got the Waves within one on a solo homer to right, 4-3.
 
In the top of the ninth inning, the Broncos scored a run on a single to center to make it 5-3. In the bottom half of the final inning, the Waves had a man in scoring position, but were retired on a strikeout to end the game.

The Waves and Broncos will play game two of the series on Saturday, April 29 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network. Please note that due to graduation taking place on Alumni Park, parking will be limited and please plan accordingly when coming to campus.
