Bradshaw Hits Grand Slam in Victory Against Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team bats came alive to force the rubber match after defeating Pacific 16-7 on Saturday afternoon at Klein Family Field in game two of the West Coast Conference series. The Waves' had a season-high 16 runs and tied their season-high with 15 runs batted in.
 
The Waves (15-21, 7-10) fell behind 4-0 in the bottom of the first to the Tigers (11-25, 4-13), but Connor Bradshaw hit his first career grand slam to tie the game 4-all in the top of the second inning to answer back. Pepperdine tacked on two more runs in the top of the second and kept the momentum as the Waves scored in four out of the seven innings played after that, including a four-run top of the fourth inning.
 
 
 
BIG WAVES
  • Junior infielder Lincoln Orellana (Apple Valley, Calif./Sheldon HS/Hawai'i/American River College) was 3-for-5 on the day including a double and a career-high four RBI. Orellana's three hits ties his career-high and has now reached base in 17 straight games.
  • Junior outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 3-for-6 on the day including one RBI and scored one run.
  • Junior outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity Pawling HS) was 2-for-4 including his first grand slam, which was his fourth home run of the season. Bradshaw brought in a career-high 5 RBI. Bradshaw is on a five-game hitting streak.
  • Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) was also 2-for-4 and crossed the plate twice. Pemberton's two hits is a new career-high and his two runs scored, ties his career-high.
  • Freshman outfielder Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) had two hits including a double and a RBI. Basseer touched home plate once. He is now on a 16-game reached base streak.
  • Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) had one hit on the day, drew two walks and crossed the plate three times, which ties his career-high. Landis has now reached base in 10 consecutive games.
  • Senior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) hit his 13th home run of the season, which was a two-run shot and touched the plate twice. Johnson also had a sac fly RBI.
  • Junior RHP Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) threw a season-high 7.0 innings. Lllewellyn struck out six Tigers' and collected his second win of the season.
GAME RECAP
 
In the bottom of the first inning, the Tigers scored four runs on five hits to get ahead 4-0 early. Quintt Landis led off the top of the second with a single through the left side. Lincoln Orellana followed with a single of his own up the middle to give Pepperdine runners on first and second with no outs. Jack Basseer then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. On a 1-1 count, Connor Bradshaw sent the next pitch over the center field fence to tie the game 4-all. Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) hit a single back up the middle to put a runner on with still no outs. Luke Pemberton smacked a single to right field. Charles Masino reached on an infield single to the pitcher to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Ryan Johnson then roped a deep ball to the center field warning track that brought in a run to give the Waves their first lead of the day at 5-4. John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) hit a sac fly to right that scored the insurance run and made it, 6-4.
 
The Tigers were able to cut the deficit to one at 6-5 after a ground ball RBI to Peck at shortstop in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fourth inning, Masino singled up the middle with one out. Johnson then reached on a fielder's choice as the Tigers got the lead runner in Masino at second. Peck and Quintt Landis drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Orellana ripped a double to left center, which cleared the bases and made it 9-5 in favor of Pepperdine. Basseer then brought in Orellana on a single to right field and doubled the lead, 10-5. In the bottom half of the fourth, Pacific hit a RBI single through the left side to cut the deficit to four, 10-6.
 
A leadoff double down the right field line by Pemberton gave Pepperdine a runner on a second with no outs. Masino reached on a throwing error by the Pacific second baseman, and the ball ended up in the Tigers' dugout to put Masino on second and Pemberton across home plate and make it 11-6. Johnson then blasts one over the left center wall to make it 13-6. In the top of the sixth inning, the Waves reached on another error by Pacific. With two outs, Masino singled through the right side of the field to bring in a run and make it 14-6. Peck and Quintt Landis had back-to-back walks in the top of the seventh. Orellana singled through the right side to bring in Peck and add to Pepperdine's lead. Bradshaw hit a RBI sac fly to center getting the score to 16-6. In the bottom half of the seventh, the Tigers scored on a RBI single to center, 16-7.
 
Both squads were scoreless in the eighth inning. The Waves nearly added on another run in the top of the ninth after a double by Bradshaw with one out, but was retired on two hard hit balls. In the bottom of the ninth, Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) picked up the first two outs on strikeouts and a routine ground ball to third ended the inning and gave Pepperdine the victory.
 
NOTABLE
  • Peck is currently on a 20-game on-base streak, which is the longest on the squad.

Pepperdine and Pacific will face off in a rubber match on Sunday, April 23. FIrst pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the WCC Network.
