Waves Drop Game One Against USF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped 5-1 in game one of the West Coast Conference series to San Francisco at Benedetti Diamond on Friday afternoon.
 
The Waves (11-20, 4-9) and Dons (14-15, 5-8) had a pitching duel for the first three innings, but San Francisco broke it open in the bottom of the fourth and Pepperdine was unable to get the bats going.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Junior outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) hit his first home run of the season, which was his third career blast. Masino also had a stolen base.
  • Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) had a double and has extended his on-base streak to 11 straight games.
  • Junior infielder Nolan Lingley (Tracy, Calif./Ripon Christian School) also had a double. 
GAME RECAP
 
The Waves and Dons were scoreless for the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, San Francisco got on top with a bases-clearing double to take an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Dons added one run on a double down the right field line to make it 4-0.
 
Both squads were held scoreless in the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, Charles Masino went yard for the first time this season to cut the deficit to three, 4-1. The Dons answered in the bottom of the seventh inning with a run of their own to extend the lead 5-1. A scoreless eighth inning brought the Waves to the top of the final frame, but Pepperdine was unable to get things going and was retired on a line out and two ground balls.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves and Dons will face off in game two on Saturday, April 15 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
