LOS ANGELES, Calf. — In a battle of cross-town rivals, the #4 Pepperdine women's tennis team fell 4-3 against the #24 UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The loss snapped a 10-match winning streak for the Waves.

The match came down to a three-set battle between top-20 singles players: #11 Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) of Pepperdine (13-3, 4-0 WCC) and UCLA (10-6, 4-4 Pac-12) freshman #19 Fangran Tian. Tian would win 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 to clinch for the Bruins.

In doubles play, UCLA took an early advantage on court three, where Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Tian defeated Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.). UCLA's sixth-ranked duo of Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle clinched the doubles point for UCLA over  #1 Tjen and Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) with a 6-3 win.

Over in singles, #18 Broadus tied things up with a quick, 6-2, 6-0 win over Ava Catanzarite on court three, then #30 Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden)'s 6-2, 6-1 victory on court two gave the Waves a 2-1 advantage. The Bruins won on court four to take back the lead, but Redelijk would win 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on court five to put Pepperdine back in the driver's seat.

UCLA would not go quietly. The Bruins tied the score with a three-set win on court six that left the fate of the match up to #11 Tjen and #19 Tian on court one. Although Tian won a close first set 7-6 (1), Tjen rallied from trailing 4-2 in the second set to win 7-6 before Tian closed the book on the match with a 6-3 third-set win.
