Waves Drop Game Two Against San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped game two of the West Coast Conference series 8-4 to San Diego on Saturday evening at Fowler Park.

The Waves (7-17, 2-6) were up 4-1 over the Toreros (10-14-1, 4-4) after the first inning, but San Diego tied it in the bottom of the fourth and hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to even the series and force a rubber match in the series finale.

GAME RECAP

With one out in the top of the first inning, Ryan Johnson sent a single through the left side. John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) then drew a walk with four straight balls. Lincoln Orellana roped an RBI double to left field to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead. Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) hit a chopper to the shortstop that scored another run. With two outs, Charles Masino sent one right back up the middle to bring in another run and make it 3-0. The Waves took advantage of a San Diego error, which gave Pepperdine runners on first and second. Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) also hit an RBI single to give the Waves a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Toreros scored on a solo home run. In the bottom of the second inning, San Diego cut the initial deficit in half, 4-2, after scoring on a ground ball to the Waves' shortstop. After a scoreless third inning for both teams, the Toreros tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on two hits to even the score at 4-all. Both squads were held scoreless for the fifth and sixth, but in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Toreros took the lead on a grand slam, 8-4.

A scoreless eighth inning brought the Waves back to the plate for their last chance of redemption in the ninth, but unfortunately Pepperdine was unable to get things going and was retired in order by San Diego.
