MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell 10-7 to Gonzaga in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves (6-15, 1-5) fell behind early, but took the lead in the third inning, 6-5, although Gonzaga (8-14, 5-1) regained the lead in the fourth and never gave it up. The Bulldogs clinched the series 2-1.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) had a base clearing double scoring three runs which were a career high in RBI.
- Freshman infielder Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) had a career-high in hits going 4-for-4 on the day and a stolen base.
- Senior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./ Clackamas HS) had three walks on the day and scored once.
GAME RECAP
Gonzaga scored three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. In the top of the third inning Gonzaga added two more runs on three hits to increase their lead to 5-0.
Back-to-back walks opened the bottom of the third inning for the Waves before a balk brought in
Grant Schoen to cut the Bulldogs lead to 5-1.
Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) then hit an RBI sac fly to center field to cut further into the lead and make it 5-2. Later on in the third,
Jack Basseer singled to center to get the Waves within two. Still in the third inning,
Cam Conley roped a bases-clearing double to put Pepperdine on top, 6-5.
Gonzaga had three runs and one hit in the top of the fourth, and took back the lead, 8-6.
Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and Basseer led off the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back singles.
Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) then had a sac fly that scored Masino to cut the deficit to one.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the ninth on three hits to increase the lead to 10-7. The Waves were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.

The Waves will head inland to Bakersfield to play a midweek contest against CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. and the game will be on ESPN+.
