Waves Shutout Gonzaga in Game One of WCC Series

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team had hot bats to roll past Gonzaga 15-0 in game one of the West Coast Conference series on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (6-13, 1-3 WCC) held the Bulldogs (7-13, 3-1 WCC) to only two hits throughout the entire game. Pepperdine scored in six out of the nine innings played and had 13 total hits.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior catcher Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) was 3-for-4 on the day and brought in two runs. His three hits tied his career-high and he collected a new career-high in runs scored touching home plate three times.
  • Junior shortstop John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) was 3-for-5 including two RBI and crossed the plate twice.
  • Sophomore infielder Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) had two hits on the day and brought in a career-high four RBI. Walczykowski also scored two runs.
  • Freshman designated hitter Jack Basseer (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS) tied his career-high in hits with three including a double and his second home run of the season. Basseer had two RBI.
  • Senior LHP Shane Telfer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) threw 6.0 innings to collect his third win of the season. Telfer struck out eight Bulldogs and only allowed two hits.
  • Freshman Gunnar Nichols (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS) earned his first career save throwing 3.0 innings in relief and did not allow a hit. Nichols collected one strikeout, which was the final out of the game.
GAME RECAP
 
The Waves jumped out front first in the bottom of the first inning after Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) and Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) led off with back-to-back walks. John Peck then loaded the bases on a single to center field. With one out, Devon Walczykowski roped a double to right center, clearing the bases to give Pepperdine a 3-0 lead. Quintt Landis then hit an RBI single to left, 4-0.
 
In the bottom third after a scoreless second inning, the Waves took advantage of an error on a bunt to score two more runs and make it 6-0. Quintt Landis hit another RBI single to left to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead. The Waves were then hit by a pitch to score the eighth run of the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs, Quintt Landis hit a double to left field. Jack Basseer went yard for a two-run shot to give Pepperdine a 10-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Walczykowski brought in another run on a ground ball to make it 11-0. Pepperdine added another run to the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Johnson sac fly to center field. With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the eighth, Johnson doubled to left field to give Pepperdine runners on second and third with two outs. Peck followed with a double of his own to left center and brought in two runs to extend the Waves' lead 14-0. Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) singled through the left side to tack on another run for Pepperdine 15-0. In the top of the ninth inning, the Waves retired the Zags with a pop up in foul territory to Quintt Landis behind the dish, a pop up to second base and a Nichols' strikeout to end the game.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves and Zags will face off for game two of the WCC series on Saturday, March 25. Prior to first pitch, at 12:30 p.m., Pepperdine will unveil the dedication for the new baseball videoboard in memory of Pepperdine's all-time winningest baseball coach, Dave Gorrie. The unveiling will be live on the WCC Network ahead of first pitch.
