Waves Sweep UC Irvine For Third Consecutive Win
3/2/2023 2:05:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's tennis program shut out UC Irvine in a Thursday matinee, defeating the Aneaters 4-0 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center for the Waves' third straight victory.
Â
Doubles went the distance to begin the match, as the Pepperdine (4-5) tandem of Linus Carlsson Halldin (Stockholm, Sweden) and Pietro Fellin (Milan, Italy) collected a 6-3 win on court three to open up the scoring. This was the first dual season action of Halldin's career. After UC Irvine (1-5) got a win on the top court, a tiebreaker on court two would decide the doubles point. Maxi Homberg (Freising, Germany) and Max Wuelfing (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) took that court 7-6 (7) to give Pepperdine an early lead and momentum heading into singles.
Â
The Waves kept the pressure on in singles, winning five of six first sets. Homberg was the first singles winner, taking court four from Rithvik Krishna 6-1, 6-4. Eero Vasa (Turku, Finland) then gave Pepperdine a 3-0 lead after a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two over Noah Zamora.
Â
To close out the sweep, Fellin earned a 6-1, 6-3 win on court five.
