INDIAN WELLS, California – The Pepperdine men's tennis program had the privilege of playing in Tennis Paradise on Sunday, taking part in the UTR College Match Challenge: BNP Paribas Open. After rallying from a 3-1 deficit at the prestigious Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the Waves fell to #8 USC 4-3.
Pepperdine (6-7) took the doubles point in convincing fashion to open the match. Court three's duo of
Pietro Fellin (Milan, Italy) and
Eric Hadigian (Sacramento, Calif.) opened the scoring with a 6-3 win on court three. To clinch the doubles point,
Linus Carlsson Halldin (Stockholm, Sweden) and
Eero Vasa (Turku, Finland) won 6-2 on court two to give the Waves an early advantage.
USC (10-3) bounced back in singles, taking five of six first sets. The Trojans then won straight-set matches on courts one, six and five, respectively, to open up a 3-1 lead before Fellin cut the lead in half with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Lodewijk Weststrate on court four.
With two courts remaining, and both in third sets,
Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden, Germany) defeated #24 Peter Makk 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 on court two for his third win of the week, and second over a top-60 singles opponent. USC closed the match with a three-set, tiebreak victory on court three to leave Indian Wells with a win.
