LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sam Choi shot an 8-under with three eagles, a career-high 64 for his time with the Pepperdine men's golf program thus far, helping him finish tied for the top-spot after day one of the Southern Highlands Collegiate.

The Waves are currently in second after shooting a 10-under 278 at the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club. Pepperdine is 5-strokes ahead of both Texas and Florida, while the team is 7-strokes behind North Carolina in the lead at 17-under.

PLAYER SCORES

Graduate Sam Choi (Anaheim, Calif./New Mexico) eagled on par-5 holes three and nine and par-3 hole 16. He also had three additional birdies throughout the day and bogeyed only once.
Graduate Roberto Nieves (Miami, Fla./Delaware) is tied for 15th, 2-under. He marked three birdies on the front nine, while posting one birdie without a single bogey on the back nine.
Senior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) and graduate Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) are tied for 29th after shooting even in the first round. Mouw had four birdies, three on the back nine, while Hitchner put in two birdies.
Graduate Luke Gifford (Boca Raton, Fla./South Florida) is tied for 80th, 8-over, despite having marked four birdies.
Sophomore Ian Maspat (San Diego, Cali./Scripps Ranch HS) is tied for 61st after competing as an individual. He shot 3-over and had three birdies.

Tomorrow, the Waves will play in the same time slot as today, paired with North Carolina and Texas. The group will start at 10:40 on hole one.
