Pepperdine Falls in Penultimate Regular-Season Contest

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Freshman Jevon Porter achieved yet another double-double and five Waves scored in double figures, but the Pepperdine men's basketball team could not cool off Santa Clara's second half shooting barrage and fell 91-82.

Porter's 11 points and 10 rebounds gifted the forward his eighth double-double of the season, and remains the only freshman in the West Coast Conference to have recorded a single double-double on the season.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior Jan Zidek (Prague, Czech Republic) led with 15 points– going 4-of-5 from the field and a spotless 2-for-2 from beyond the arc– as well as four rebounds, a steal and an assist.
  • Hometown kid Mike Mitchell Jr. (San Jose, Calif./Arch Bishop Mitty HS) contributed 14 points, five boards and five assists.
  • Sophomore Maxwell Lewis (Las Vegas, Nev./AZ Compass Prep) contributed 14 points and three rebounds on the night.
  • Freshman Jevon Porter (Columbia, Mo./Father Tolton Catholic HS) tacked on two steals, a block and two assists in addition to his 11/10 double-double.
  • Sophomore Houston Mallette (Alameda, Calif./Pacifica Christian HS) put in 10 points, three boards and two assists.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Broncos stormed out to a 7-2 lead early in the first half, but the Waves enjoyed a quick, minute-and-a-half 9-0 run courtesy of Mallette and Carson Basham (Phoenix, Ariz./AZ Compass Prep). Santa Clara would not stay quiet for long as they took back the lead halfway through the period at 19-17. From that point on, the two teams would trade buckets with Pepperdine largely in the lead up until four minutes before the buzzer, as Lewis took charge with back-to-back scoring possessions. It was SCU, however, who grabbed the advantage heading into the locker room at 40-36 off of a 7-0 Broncos run.

Santa Clara righted their first half wrongs in the scoring column during the second period, as Brandin Podziemski came alive and dropped
15 of his 19-total points to assist the Broncos. The Waves got to the line more in the second half but could not stop the Broncos' barrage from beyond the arc. Pepperdine would again trade baskets with the home team, but would fall eventually at 91-82.

KEY STATS
  • The two teams shot evenly throughout the night as both totaled 49% from field goal range on either side.
  • The turnover count was also even on both ends (10), but Santa Clara capitalized more on Pepperdine mistakes scoring 14 points off of Waves turnovers to Pepperdine's 11.

UP NEXT
The Waves return to Malibu for the regular season finale against PCH rival LMU on Saturday evening and will honor seniors Jan Zidek and Majok Deng before the game. Bally Sports will have the broadcast with veteran play-by-play man Al Epstein on the mic on Wavecasts.
