Waves Continue the Spring with The Show at Spanish Trail

 MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's golf team heads into the second week of the spring season on Monday, competing at The Show at Spanish Trail in Las Vegas, Nev. through Tuesday.Â

EVENT INFO — The tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,507-yard Spanish Trail Country Club, located in Las Vegas, Nev. There will be 36 holes on Monday (February 20) and a final round of 18 on Tuesday (February 21).Â

SCORING & TEE TIMES — Live scoring will be available on Golfstat with links found on www.PepperdineWaves.com. Tee times are set for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. both days.

SPECTATORS — Spectators are welcome to come and watch the golfers compete and enjoy the beauty of the Palos Verdes Golf Club at no admission charge.Â

FIELD — In addition to Pepperdine, the 15-team field also includes co-hosts UNLV and Furman, as well as Charlotte, Denver, Kent State, Mississippi State, Nevada, New Mexico, North Florida, Old Dominion, Purdue, South Florida, Texas State and Washington State.
PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The Waves' lineup consists of juniors Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia) and Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.), sophomore Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.) and freshmen Jeneath Wong (Melbourne, Australia) and Yingzhi Zhu (Nanjing, China).

EVENT HISTORY — The is the tournament's second year of existence, with tournament-host UNLV taking home the title in 2022 with a 4-under 72.

RANKINGS — Golfstat has the Waves ranked #30 this week, while Golfweek has the Waves at #35 on the publication's rankings list. Jeneath Wong ranks #45 on the World Amateur Golf Ranking, while Lion Higo, Lauren Gomez and Kaleiya Romero currently rank #37, #105 and #139 respectively on the individual Golfstat rankings.

SPRING HIGHLIGHTS — Last week, the Waves golfed at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge, finishing 9th among 16 teams, and besting #12 UCLA by four strokes. Lion Higo led the Waves, finishing strong in the final round after posting four birdies and ending the round 2-under par. She tied for 17th overall with a 3-over 216.Â

FALL HIGHLIGHTS — In the fall, the Waves won both the Golfweek Red Sky Classic and Golf Iconic Classic, shooting 18- and 5-under respectively. Lion Higo won her first college title at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic title by a 15-stroke margin. Her score of 10-under tied the fourth-best score in Pepperdine history and Gomez came in second at 7-under. It was the program's fifth victory at the Golfweek event, though the first since 2014 and it was also the first time the Waves had won a tournament with double-digit teams in it since 2016.Â

At the Golf Iconic Classic, the squad had a three-day total of 5-under, starting a stroke behind New Mexico State in the final round before battling it to eventually beat the Aggies by four. Higo finished second, while Kaleiya Romero finished tied-fourth. Pepperdine finished fourth at the season-opening USF Intercollegiate, beating all four other WCC schools, plus two Pac-12 programs.  Lauren Gomez tied for sixth and Romero tied for eighth.
