LOS ANGELES, Calif. – KK Brodie of the Pepperdine women's basketball team put up a career-high 18 points, though the Waves dropped 76-71 to PCH Cup rival LMU in Gersten Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
Brodie shot 7-for-12 for her 18 points in the game. The Waves (8-18, 3-13) and Lions (7-20, 4-12) each outscored each other in two quarters, though the opposition had the edge after the fourth quarter.
BIG WAVES
- Freshman center KK Brodie (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge HS) led the squad with her career-high 18 points, and had four rebounds.
- Graduate guard Marly Walls (Bardstown, Ky./Nelson County HS/Bucknell) collected 17 points and brought down six rebounds. She also dished out five assists and had two steals.
- Junior forward Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Pacific Palisades Charter HS) had her second double-double with 12 points and tied her career-high in rebounds with 11. Nwaba had two assists and one steal.
- Graduate forward Theresa Grace Mbanefo (Otsego, Minn./Blaine HS/Cornell) put up 11 points and had seven rebounds.
GAME RECAP
The Waves scored the first bucket of the game, but the Lions answered with a three-pointer to take the lead. After exchanging the lead within the first few minutes, LMU then went on a nine-point scoring run to get a 14-6 advantage over the Waves. Pepperdine collected the last basket of the quarter to cut the deficit to five at 15-10.
In the second, Pepperdine and LMU went back-and-forth with baskets and free throws, until a six-point run for the Lions increased the advantage to eight, 28-20. With under two minutes until the break, the Waves had nine consecutive points to get Pepperdine within four, 38-34, going into half.
Following halftime, the scoring continued for Pepperdine with a Mbanefo layup and a Brumfield three-pointer to take the lead at 39-38. LMU put up seven points to get the lead back, 50-40. The Waves and Lions went back and forth from the free throw line, with Pepperdine having made the final two free throws with less than five seconds left of the quarter, 60-51.
In the final frame, the Waves scored 11 straight points to start and took the lead again at 62-60, however, the Lions scored five points to flip the lead back in their favor. With under five to go, Pepperdine and LMU exchanged baskets, before the Lions had three straight free throws to earn the 76-71 win.
