Waves Fall in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, K.Y. – Shooting woes plagued the Pepperdine men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon and the Waves couldn't stymie Louisville's rebounding effort, resulting in an 85-63 final in the KFC Yum! Center.

BIG WAVES
  • Michael Ajayi (Kent, Wash./Pierce College) led the Waves with 17 points on 7-for-14 field goal shooting and pulled down seven rebounds in addition to an assist and a block.
  • Houston Mallette (Alameda, Calif./Pacifica Christian HS) followed with 11 points, two assists, a rebound and a steal.
  • Malik Moore (Ventura, Calif./Heritage Christian) put together 10 points, four boards and three assists.

KEY STATS
  • It wasn't Pepperdine's night in the shooting department as the Waves finished at 25% from beyond the arc and 40.4% from field goal range, whereas Louisville shot 56.3% from three-point land and 48.5% from the field.
  • The Cardinals out-rebounded the Waves 43-27 and grabbed 15 offensive boards compared to Pepperdine's five.
  • The turnover count finished even at 13, but Louisville capitalized off of Pepperdine mistakes at a count of 16 points to 10.

RECAP
The Waves came out with pace, as Mallette sank a midrange jumper and a three back-to-back. Pepperdine battled for half of the first period, but got lost on the backside of its defensive possessions and had trouble blocking out the Cardinals. Midway through, the Waves were joined by Jevon Porter who missed the first half of this season due to injury and helped the good guys to a 6-0 run, but were thwarted defensively and headed into the locker room at a score of 39-25.

Pepperdine fought back in the opening minutes of the second stanza getting within seven points of the Cards but Louisville took off on a 10-0 run to quash the Waves' momentum with just over 11 minutes to play. The Cardinals extended their lead to as much as 30 before emptying its bench and the Waves reserves brought the lead down to 22 before an 85-63 final.

UP NEXT
Pepperdine returns home for one last pre-Christmas matchup against William and Mary, set to tip off at 4 p.m. on December 21.
