Pepperdine Falls to New Mexico

MALIBU, Calif. — After falling behind 9-0 in the first quarter, the Pepperdine women's basketball team was unable to mount a comeback against New Mexico in Firestone Fieldhouse on Thursday night.

The Waves (1-1) were able to get within three late in the fourth quarter, but timely free throws by the Lobos (2-0) helped them hold on to a 57-48 victory.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior forward Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) collected her first double-double on the season as she had a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds. Nwaba also dished out six assists against the Lobos.
  • Graduate guard Myra Gordon (L.D. Bell HS/Fort Worth, Texas) scored in double figures for the second time in a row with 11 points. Gordon also pulled down six rebounds on the night.
  • Freshman guard Addi Melone (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) added seven points and six rebounds in the contest.
New Mexico stifled Pepperdine to start the game, as its stellar defense led to a 9-0 advantage for the Lobos with 1:38 left in the first quarter. Maggie Vick (Morristown, Tenn./Lakeway) put an end to the run and got the Waves on the board with a jump shot in the paint. The Lobos took an 11-4 advantage heading into the second quarter.

New Mexico opened up the scoring in the second period with a three on their first possession. The Waves and Lobos then traded buckets throughout the rest of the quarter. Nwaba posted seven points and two assists in the period. However, the Lobos shot 58.3% and held the Waves to a 40% clip in the period as they took a twelve point lead into the break, 30-18.

Pepperdine found themselves down eight thanks to a pair of layups from Gordon and Jorynn Ross (Milwaukee, Wisc./Summer Creek HS), as well as a jumper by Melone to start the third quarter, 32-24. The two teams went back and forth during the middle of the period as the Lobos held a nine point advantage with 2:12 in the quarter. A pair of buckets by Nwaba in the final minute of the period brought the Waves within seven heading into the final period, 41-34.

The Lobos struck first in the fourth quarter, and held a 45-36 lead with 6:33 left in the game. The Waves then got a bucket from KK Brodie (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge HS) which started a scoring run for Pepperdine. Gordon then knocked down two free throws before Nwaba had a put-back layup to cap the 6-0 run and bring the Waves within three with 2:37 remaining, 45-42. New Mexico responded with a quick 5-0 run to regain an eight point lead with 2:04 left in the game, 50-42. The Waves were able to get back within five, but the Lobos were able to hit their free throws as they took a 57-48 victory.
