SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Punching their tickets to the ITA National Fall Championships for the second year in a row, Pepperdine women's tennis players Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen made quick work of Temple's team of Maiko Uchijima and Samantha Nanere in a 6-1, 6-1 win on Friday.
Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) — who are the nation's No. 1 women's doubles team and the defending ITA Fall Doubles Champions — will take on Anastasiya Komar and Ange Oby Kajuru of Oklahoma State in the semifinals tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Uchijima and Nanere, who upset two teams to make the quarterfinals, broke the Waves to start the first set.
Their lead was short-lived.
Broadus and Tjen held serve, then won the next five games in the first set to win 6-1. They found their rhythm in the second set, as they won the first five games without reaching deuce point in any game. Then in the sixth game, the Owls avoided being blanked by breaking the Waves, yet the Waves broke back, rattling off three-straight points to win the match 6-1, 6-1.
