Homberg and Winter's Run Ends in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Pepperdine men's tennis players Maxi Homberg and Edward Winter saw their run in the ITA National Fall Championships come to an end in the doubles quarterfinals on Friday.

The Waves underclassmen fell 6-4, 6-3 to Old Dominion brothers Connor and Codie Van Schalkwyk at Barnes Tennis Center. Despite the result, the duo went 9-2 this fall and went further than any Pepperdine men's doubles team has gone before in the ITA's premier fall event.

Homberg (Freising, Germany) and Winter (Adelaide, Australia) held serve to start the match, yet the Van Schalkwyk brothers broke the Waves at 2-1, then consolidated the break to go up three games to one. The match was played on serve for the next three games, then the Waves nearly broke the Van Schalkwyks on deuce point in the eighth game. The Old Dominion duo prevailed, then took the first set two games later, 6-4.

In the second set, the Van Schalkwyks went up a break early before Pepperdine got on the board in the third game. Winter and Homberg broke the Van Schalkwyks to tie the second set at two games apiece, then consolidated the break.

But like the last set, a lost deuce point was the pivotal moment in the second set. Winter and Homberg forced a break point, yet the Old Dominion duo won on deuce point to tie the second set 3-3. With momentum in hand, the Van Schalkwyks wouldn't look back in their 6-4, 6-3 win.

Over in the consolation draw, Linus Carlsson Halldin and George Davis faced their toughest competition of the fall season in the No. 6 ranked Hunter Heck and Karlis Ozolins of Illinois. The Waves fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Elsewhere in San Diego, the Waves competed at the Hagedorn Hidden Dual, hosted by the University of San Diego. Playing against Arizona for the second time this fall, the Waves notched two wins in singles and another in doubles. Winter picked up another ranked singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 over #99 Herman Hoeyeraal, while Carlsson Halldin won 6-3, 6-3 over Casper Christiansen. Over in doubles, Carlsson Halldin (Stockholm, Sweden) and Davis (London England) won 6-2 over Hoeyerall and Christensen.
