Waves Drop Road Game at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho — Capping off its three-game Mountain West Conference road trip, the Pepperdine women's basketball team fell 63-47 to Boise State in the Extra Mile Arena on Monday night.

Despite a Pepperdine career-high 19 points from junior guard Ella Brubaker, the Waves (2-4) struggled offensively and the Broncos (4-0) went on a late 10-1 run to seal the deal. Although Pepperdine committed fewer turnovers than Boise State (15 to the Broncos' 18), the Waves went 2-for-18 (11.1%) from beyond the arc and made only one field goal in the final 5 minutes and 5 seconds of the fourth quarter.

BIG WAVES

  • Ella Brubaker (University Place, Wash. Curtis HS) led all scorers with 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting, plus she had four rebounds and two steals. Her 19-point output was a Division I career high.

  • Senior Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif. Palisades Charter HS) finished with seven points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

  • Graduate student Myra Gordon (Fort Worth, Texas/L.D. Bell HS) provided the Waves with some offense in the second half with seven points, plus four rebounds and two steals.

  • Sophomore KK Brodie (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge HS) led Pepperdine with seven rebounds and four blocks, plus she chipped in two points and a steal.

KEY STATS

After Pepperdine and Boise State traded empty possessions to start the first quarter, the Broncos broke through by making their first three of the night to go up 5-2 with 7 minutes and 30 seconds to go. From there, Pepperdine pulled within one point on three occasions: First off a jumper from Brodie, then off a midrange basket from Helena Friend and then with Nwaba going coast-to-coast off a steal to make it 9-8, Boise State. A 9-0 Bronco run gave the hosts a double-digit lead early, but Brubaker checked in and made her first field goal of the night to get Pepperdine in double digits.

Trailing 18-10 after the first quarter, Pepperdine needed an offensive spark. Brubaker delivered.

Aside from a quarter-opening basket from Holly Griffiths, the second quarter was all Brubaker. Nwaba found the junior guard in the corner, who sank a three through contact and converted the four-point play. On the next possession, with the shot clock ticking down, Brubaker hit a fadeaway jumper from the elbow to tie the game at 18. All told, Brubaker scored 10 of the Waves' 12 points in the second quarter.

Trailing 30-22 at the break, the Waves opened the scoring by working the ball around the perimeter, then finding Megan Harkey down low for a jumper in the paint. Both teams traded baskets until the Broncos ripped off a 7-0 run to go up 42-28 with four minutes left in the third quarter. Nwaba responded by making back-to-back layups, the latter of which made it a 43-32 contest. Later, Gordon capped off the scoring for the Waves by beating the third-quarter buzzer on an inbounds play to make it a 47-35 game in favor of Boise State.

From that point forward, the Waves only got within single-digits of the Broncos once. Gordon picked up where she left off in the fourth by making four-straight points, then Brubaker made back-to-back jumpers to pull Pepperdine within nine with 5 minutes and 5 seconds to go. Her However, the Broncos threw on the afterburners with a 10-1 run, in which Pepperdine went 0-for-5 from the field. A pair of free throws from Brubaker put the finishing touches on the 63-47 ballgame.
