CARY, N.C. — Pepperdine women's tennis junior Savannah Broadus extended her stay in the ITA All-American Championships with a three-set win over Boston College's Maria Aguiar on Thursday.
The win sets Broadus (Carrollton, Texas), ranked #23 in the ITA singles polls, up against #5 Reese Brantmeier of North Carolina in the next round of the consolation draw tomorrow at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. local time.
After taking the first set 6-3, Broadus faced a setback in the second set, which forced her second-straight third-set match in as many days. However, Broadus broke Aguiar in the third game after Aguiar's double fault gave her an early advantage. Serving with a 2-1 lead, Broadus consolidated the break by winning a critical deciding point that would give her the upper hand for the remainder of the set.
The match held serve until Broadus broke Aguiar again to take a 5-2 lead — one that she wouldn't relinquish.
With the 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win, Broadus now goes for her second win over a ranked singles opponent of the fall season. The ITA All-American Championships has been tough sledding for Broadus, who will face her second top-10-ranked tournament opponent. Brantmeier, UNC's #1/#2 singles player on last year's national championship team, ended up in the consolation draw after losing to Stanford's Angelica Blake on Wednesday.
