MALIBU, Calif. — Several members of the Pepperdine men's tennis team will travel north to UC Santa Barbara for the UCSB Fall Classic, which will take place from Oct. 6-8.
The tournament features several flights of singles and doubles action — all with main draws and consolation draws. Friday's action will begin at 11 a.m. PT, while Saturday's and Sunday's matches are set to start at 9 a.m. PT.Â
Matches will be streamed via PlaySight, while scores will be updated at the end of each day's matches. Up-to-date scores will be provided via the @PeppTennis X (formerly known as Twitter) account.
Aside from Pepperdine and the hosting UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, seven schools will compete in the event this weekend — including fellow West Coast Conference member Loyola Marymount. Cal Poly, Grand Canyon, UCLA, UC Irvine, San Diego State and non-Division I institution Westmont are expected to attend.
SCOUTING THE WAVES
The Waves are sending Tyler Davis and Photos Photiades to the UCSB Fall Classic — both of whom will be making their Pepperdine road debuts. In singles play, Davis (Redlands, Calif.) will be in Flight A, while Photiades (Dali, Cyprus) will be in Flight B. The duo will also team up to play in Flight B of the doubles draw.
Opening up singles play, Davis will face UCSB junior Gianluca Brunkow, who kicked off his season at the Battle in the Bay Tournament in San Francisco two weeks ago. Brunkow went 1-1 in singles play at the event with his win coming against Oklahoma's Asahi Harazaki and his loss coming against #23 Colton Smith of Arizona. The junior had a 9-8 record in singles play last season while playing from the second through fifth positions.
Photiades will take on Cal Poly freshman Sean Ferguson — a five-star recruit from Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif. This weekend will be Ferguson's season debut.Â
In doubles, Davis and Photiades will get their first taste of West Coast Conference action, as they'll play Loyola Marymount sophomores Max Wuelfing and Inigo Diaz. The UCSB Fall Classic weekend will not only be Wuelfing and Diaz's season debuts but also their first matches in LMU uniforms.
Two weeks ago at The Malibu Showdown, Davis and Photiades went 1-2 in three matches in the third line of doubles play, with their win coming against Louisville on Sunday, Sept. 24. Against Louisville, Davis picked up his first win in a Waves' uniform with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Louisville's Russell Lokko. Photiades is going for his first collegiate singles win this weekend.
