Waves Doubles Teams Gear up for ITA National Fall Championships
10/31/2023 3:21:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. — For the first time under the direction of Pepperdine men's tennis coach Adam Schaechterle, the Waves will send multiple doubles teams to the ITA National Fall Championships, held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego from Nov. 1-5.
Waves underclassmen Maxi Homberg (Freising, Germany) and Edward Winter (Adelaide, Australia) — the runner-up in the Southwest Regional — will be joined by teammates Linus Carlsson Halldin (Stockholm, Sweden) and George Davis (London, England) in the main doubles draw, which begins on Nov. 1.
Homberg and Winter will face off against Mississippi's Nikola Slaciv and Lukas Engelhardt at 3 p.m., then Carlsson Halldin and Davis will play Dhakshineswar Suresh and Holden Koons of Wake Forest at 5:30 p.m.
All matches will be livestreamed via TrackTennis, plus Cracked Racquets will provide whip-around, color commentary on its YouTube channel. Links to both broadcasts and live stats can be found on the men's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.Â
Pepperdine is one of three programs with multiple doubles teams in the field, joining TCU and Old Dominion — both of whom were ranked in the final ITA polls this past spring. This is the second straight year the Waves have made the doubles draw at the ITA National Fall Championships; All-Americans Daniel De Jonge and Tim Zeitvogel reached the round of 16 a year ago.
HOW THEY GOT HERE
Hosting the ITA Southwest Regional at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, both Pepperdine doubles teams reached the semifinals against some of the nation's toughest competition. While Homberg and Winter faced little resistance heading into the semifinals, Carlsson Halldin and Davis fended off several comeback attempts in the first round and the quarterfinals on their semifinal run.Â
Both teams' successes set up an all-Waves matchup in the semifinals. With a spot to ITA Nationals on the line, Homberg and Winter prevailed with a 7-5, 6-3 win.
In the championship match, Homberg and Winter fell 6-3, 6-3 to an Arizona team featuring eventual ITA Southwest Singles Champion Colton Smith and Jay Friend. The Waves' runner-up finish gave them an at-large bid to ITA Fall Nationals.
Carlsson Halldin and Davis, meanwhile, earned one of the few at-large bids last week. Aside from a season-opening loss to #25 Gavin Young and Nino Ehrenschneider of Michigan, Carlsson Halldin and Davis carried a five-match win streak heading into the ITA Southwest Regional semifinals. The duo has a 5-2 record this season.Â
