Porter Selected to Karl Malone Award Watch List

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - Sophomore Jevon Porter of the Pepperdine men's basketball team was named to the Karl Malone Award Watch List on Thursday, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced.
The accolade is awarded to the top power forward in the country each year and includes 20 players on the committee's radar at the beginning of the season, narrowing down to 10 midway through the year. Past Karl Malone Award winners include the likes of Duke's Zion Williamson, Arizona's Deyondre Ayton and last year's pick Keegan Murray of Iowa.
Porter returns from a breakout freshman season that earned him a spot on the postseason WCC All-Freshman squad and will look to build on his 12.1 points and team-high 7.2 boards per contest from his debut year. The Missouri native also recorded eight double-doubles as a freshman — no other WCC freshman had even a single double-double — which earned him three WCC Freshman of the Week honors.
The 6-foot-11 forward has garnered NBA attention for his "3-and-D" presence and will enter the 2023-24 season as the only 6-foot-10 and over player to have averaged 35% from beyond the arc last (freshman) season.
Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies will open up on www.hoophallawards.com on Friday, October 27 and adds extra points to each nominee based on the amount of votes.
The full list includes: Adem Bona (UCLA), Alex Karaban (UConn), Bryce Hopkins (Providence), Coleman Hawkins (Illinois), DaRon Holmes (Dayton), Drew Pember (UNC-Asheville), Enrique Freeman (Akron), Fousseyni Traore (BYU), Graham Ike (Gonzaga), Grant Nelson (Alabama), J'Wan Roberts (Houston), Jevon Porter (Pepperdine), Julian Reese (Maryland), Keshad Johnson (Arizona), Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Norchad Omier (Miami), Oso Ighodaro (Marquette), Tolu Smith (Mississippi State), Trevon Brazile (Arkansas) and Tristan Da Silva (Colorado).
Pepperdine tips off the 2023-24 season on November 6 in Malibu against Concordia Irvine. Head to PepperdineWaves.com/Tickets to reserve your seat and cheer on the Waves!
