SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The nation's top doubles team would not be denied on Monday, as Pepperdine's Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen won the ITA Southwest Regional doubles title over Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter of UC Santa Barbara. Later that day, Broadus advanced to Tuesday's singles final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Grace Piper of USC.
Playing against the 2-seed in the bracket and the nation's No. 13 doubles team, Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) fended off the Gauchos in a 6-4, 7-5 win that nearly needed a third-set tiebreaker. With the win, the Broadus and Tjen not only outdid their runner-up finish from last year, but also became the first Waves team to win the doubles event since Christine Maddox and Mayar Sherif did so in 2016.
Both the Waves and the Gauchos will make the field of the ITA Fall National Championships, held at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. from Nov. 1-5. There, Broadus and Tjen aim to defend their national title, which propelled them to the top of the ITA doubles rankings during the 2022-23 season.
Speaking of title defenses: Broadus will defend her ITA Southwest Regional singles title tomorrow against Emma Charney of USC tomorrow at 10 a.m. Charney marks the third Trojan Broadus will face in the event: She beat Snow Han 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 16 on Saturday, plus she beat the aforementioned Piper on Tuesday.
Should Broadus win tomorrow, she will be Pepperdine's third straight singles winner at the ITA Southwest Regional. Last year, Broadus won the title and Lisa Zaar won the title in 2021.
