SAN DIEGO, Calif. — With four days of matches in the books, the nation's No. 1 doubles team of Pepperdine's Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen will play for their second straight ITA Southwest Regional title on Monday. Broadus is also still alive in singles, as she'll play in the semifinal on Monday at noon.
Despite a different scoring format in the semifinals, Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) made quick work of USC's Parker Fry and Grace Piper with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Although the Waves have already punched their ticket to the ITA Fall National Championships, they'll go for the regional title against UC Santa Barbara's top-15 duo of Kira Reuter and Amelia Honer tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Broadus will have a busy Monday, as she is the only Pepperdine player remaining in the main singles draw. She'll have to play two singles matches on Monday to win the ITA Southwest Regional singles title: first against Grace Piper of USC at noon, and then against either #45 Honer or USC's Emma Charney — the latter of whom upset Tjen in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Elsewhere in singles, #11 Tjen and Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) bowed out with tough defeats on Sunday. Tjen lost a heartbreaking 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 three-setter against the aforementioned Charney, whereas Campana lost 6-4, 6-4 to #45 Honer of UCSB. In extra consolation matches, Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) beat star freshman Emilija Tverijonaite in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
