Pepperdine Earns 3-1 Victory Over Portland on Senior Day

MALIBU, Calif.  – Three different Waves found the back of the net as the Pepperdine women's soccer team defeated West Coast Conference foe Portland 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. This game was the Waves' Senior Day and they honored Julianna Duckett, Skylar Enge, CC Maloof, Kam Pickett, Victoria Romero and Alex Sampson.

The Waves (7-3-5, 4-1-0 WCC) fell behind in the first 15 minutes on a Pilots' (9-3-2, 3-2-0 WCC) goal, but Tatum Wynalda scored the equalizer five minutes later. The momentum continued for Pepperdine as Tori Waldeck found the back of the net in the 27th minute to give the Waves a 2-1 lead looking towards the half. Following the break, the Pilots put the pressure on, but the Waves were unphased as Julia Quinonez scored an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Pepperdine stood tall on defense and held onto the victory. The Waves outshot the Pilots 15-11.

GOALS

Portland 15': As the Waves tried to clear the ball out of the defensive zone, the Pilots intercepted the pass. Sophia Mattice of Portland then made one pass to Nedya Sawan. Sawan then defeated the Waves defender and sent a right-footed shot into the back of the net.

Pepperdine 20': Freshman forward Julia Quinonez (Torrance, Calif./Torrance HS) received the ball from senior midfielder Julianna Duckett (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga HS) and crashed outside the left side of the box. Quinonez made one pass to herself in front of the Pilots' defender and did not let the ball go out of bounds. Quinonez then gained control of the ball and sent a right-footed tap towards sophomore midfielder Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS), who was between two Portland defenders. The ball connected with Wynalda's foot, and was deflected off the leg of a Portland player, which then landed right back to Wynalda and she put a right-footed shot into the back of the net. This was Wynalda's fourth goal of the season.

Pepperdine 27': Sophomore midfielder Karina Gonzalez (Sanger, Calif./Hallmark Charter School) kept the ball away from the Portland defender just outside the right side of the box. Gonzalez then passed the ball behind her, which slowly rolled to senior midfielder Skylar Enge (Cardiff, Calif./Pacific Ridge School). Enge then sent a cross that bounced off a Portland player and rolled to the foot of senior forward Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS). Waldeck then let a right-footed shot rip into the back of the net. This was Waldeck's eight goal of the season.

Pepperdine 74': Freshman midfielder Ava Verplancke (Irvine, Calif./Portola HS) sent a rocket of a pass from the defensive side of the midfield circle towards a sprinting Quinonez. Quinonez beat the Portland defender and tapped the ball towards the box. As Quinonez and the defender made their way in the box, the Pilots' keeper came out to try and make the save, but Quinonez slowed down and tapped the ball with her right foot past the keeper. The ball then rolled past the goal line before the Pilots were able to stop it. This was Quinonez's fifth goal of the season and her second game of her career to score a goal and tally an assist.
