#4 Pepperdine Closes Out Undefeated Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Santa Clara, Calif. In the first game, the #4 Pepperdine men's water polo team gutted out a 15-14 win over #16 Fordham. The Waves outshot the Rams .536 to .452 and used their high-powered offense to clinch the win.
 
In the second game, Pepperdine took down Long Island University 23-5. The Waves jumped out to an early 6-3 lead and never looked back. They held the Sharks to just two goals in the final 24 minutes of the contest.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore attacker Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary/BME International Secondary School) scored five goals and three assists in the two games today.
  • Graduate attacker Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) tallied six goals and five assists for a total of 11 points on the day.
  • Sophomore attacker Conor Brough (Dana Point, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) had four goals, five assists and six steals in the game against Long Island University.
  • Freshman center Chase Wilson (New York, N.Y./Greenwich HS) posted a hat-trick in the second game of the day and had a total of four goals on Sunday. 
GAME #1 RECAP

Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) found the back of the net two minutes into the game and gave the Waves an early 1-0 lead. The Rams countered with a goal of their own, but back-to-back goals by Csapo and Travis Reynolds (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Loyola HS) gave Pepperdine a 3-1 advantage. A back-and-forth end to the period resulted in the Waves taking a 6-4 lead into the second quarter.
 
Fordham scored a goal to start the second period, but Ryan Brosnan (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/UC Santa Barbara) quickly found the back of the cage to put Pepperdine back in front by two, 7-5. The Rams then scored back-to-back goals to tie the game 7-7. Csapo scored late in the period and the Waves took an 8-7 lead into halftime.
 
Pepperdine scored three straight goals to start the second half to increase their advantage, 11-7. Fordham countered with back-to-back goals to make it an 11-9 game in favor of the Waves. Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary/Leovey Klara Gimnazium) then found the back of the net to put Pepperdine in front by three, 12-9. The teams went back-and-forth to end the period and the Waves took a 13-11 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Csapo scored his fourth goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to increase Pepperdine's advantage, 14-11. The Rams fought back late in the fourth, but a goal by Brosnan sealed the game and gave the Waves a 15-14 victory.
 
Pepperdine was led by Csapo who had four goals in the game, and a total of eight Waves scored in the contest.

GAME #2 RECAP
 
Pepperdine held a 6-3 advantage against Long Island University after the first quarter. Stifling defense from sophomore goalie Zach Cwiertnia (Villa Park, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) held the Sharks to just one goal in the second period. The Waves tacked on seven more goals in the second quarter and took a 13-4 lead into halftime. Pepperdine added five goals in the third quarter and took an 18-5 advantage heading into the final period. The Waves kept the Sharks off the board in the fourth quarter and tacked on five more goals to win the contest 23-5.
 
Clay Kaneko (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS), Wilson, Brough and Jarvis all tallied hat-tricks in the game. Brough also picked up five assists and six steals during the contest.
 
Jarvis led the way with six goals, and a total of 11 Waves scored in the game.
