SAN DIEGO, Calif. — After the third day of the ITA Southwest Regional tournament, the Pepperdine women's tennis team has three singles players still alive and its doubles team of Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen reached the semifinals for the second straight year.
The nation's No. 1 doubles team of Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) won both matches today. With the wins, they will take on USC's Parker Fry and Grace Harper in the semifinals at 9 a.m. at San Diego State with a spot in the ITA Fall Championship on the line.
Their day began with an 8-5 win over UC San Diego's Bruu-Syversen and Abigail Desiatnikov, then ended with an 8-4 win over Grand Canyon's Santa Strombacha and Natasha Puehse — a team the Waves faced at last year's ITA Southwest Regionals and the NCAA Tournament last year.
Elsewhere, Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) fought valiantly against the nation's No. 13 doubles team of Amelia Honer and Kira Reuter of UC Santa Barbara. Despite forcing a tiebreak, the Waves fell 8-7 (6) in the round of 16.
In singles, #23 Broadus got the better of USC's Snow Han in a 7-5 first set before the former wrapped up the match with a 6-1 second-set win. The other two Pepperdine singles wins needed three sets: #11 Tjen needed three sets to get past Arizona State's Marianna Argyrokastriti in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win; then Campana outlasted San Diego's Abigail Desiatnikov 6-7 (6), 6-1, 7-6 (3). Redelijk would fall in straight sets to Grace Piper of USC, 6-2, 7-5.
Familiar foes await the Waves in the singles quarterfinals. Tjen will play USC's Emma Charney, Campana will play UCSB's Amelia Honer after facing her in doubles on Saturday, plus Broadus and San Diego's Claudia De Las Heras will square off in an all-West Coast Conference quarterfinal showdown. Should Tjen and Campana win, they will set up an all-Pepperdine semifinal.
