SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Put simply: Pepperdine women's tennis players won all of their matches at the ITA Southwest Regionals on Friday.
Put differently: All four singles players and both doubles teams recorded multiple wins on the second day of the ITA Southwest Regionals, setting up several round-of-16 matches held in the San Diego area tomorrow morning.
In doubles, the nation's No. 1 doubles team of Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) faced little resistance in a dominant 8-1 win in the round of 32. Elsewhere, their teammates Anna Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) parlayed an opening-round 8-2 win and an 8-4 second-round win over two Big West opponents to reach the round of 16.
While Broadus and Tjen have an easier path as the top seed, Campana and Redelijk have a prime opportunity to break into the ITA doubles rankings with a match against the nation's No. 13 team of Kira Reuter and Amelia Honer of UC Santa Barbara tomorrow. Start times have yet to be determined as of press time.
Over in singles, the Waves continued to roll through the bracket as all four singles players overpowered their opponents in the round of 32. Tjen beat USC sophomore Sloane Morra 6-1, 6-2, Broadus dispatched fellow West Coast Conference player Jordyn McBride of San Diego 6-1, 6-1, and Redelijk beat Hawai'i freshman Nelly Knezkova 6-3, 6-1.
Campana, meanwhile, had the toughest sledding against one of the ITA's top-10 newcomers in Arizona State's Emilija Tverijonaite. Although the Pepperdine graduate senior needed three sets to win, the 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 win was not only against the toughest opponent any Wave faced in the round of 32 but also another quality win in what has been a productive fall season.
